Open Learning Glossary

Course Formats
  • Standard Web Course
    Web-based courses are delivered primarily via the Internet using a learning management system. They may include other materials such as DVDs and textbooks that are sent out to students. In these courses students study individually at their own pace with Open Learning Faculty Member support.

  • Online Paced Course
    Online courses are delivered via the Internet using a learning management system and are based on a cohort model. These courses, which are led by an Open Learning Faculty Member, promote high levels of activity and collaboration within the cohort. Each class is paced and has a specific start and end date.

  • Print Course
    Print-based courses are delivered primarily via packages of printed materials that are sent out to students. These packages may include other materials such as DVDs and textbooks. In these courses students study individually at their own pace with Open Learning Faculty Member support. Some print-based courses include resources that require Internet access.

Roles
Writer (aka SME or Curriculum Developer):
  • Primary subject matter expert (SME) and developer of the course blueprint and content
  • Ensures currency and accuracy of the course content
  • Collaborates with other members of the project team (instructional designer, Consultant, media, etc.) in a consultative and iterative process of draft, feedback, and revision of curriculum products (selection of resources, development of blueprint, development of course materials)
  • Responsible for identifying all third-party materials used in development of curriculum and provides source information needed to meet TRU policies for use of intellectual property

Consultant (aka Curriculum Reviewer):
  • Secondary subject matter expert (SME) and consultant on the course blueprint and content
  • Collaborates with other members of the project team (instructional designer, Writer) on selection of course resources and development of the course blueprint
  • At times, provides feedback on draft materials developed

Instructional Designer, ID
  • Pedagogical expertise in design of curriculum, providing guidance to the Writer
  • Ensures that the curriculum developed meets the learning outcomes and has appropriate assessments
  • Project manager, responsible for managing the project scope, resources, budget, and timeline
  • Maintains communication among members of the project team
  • Overall responsibility for ensuring that the products of the curriculum development project meet established quality standards

OL Acronyms
  • IP = Intellectual Property
  • IPO = Intellectual Property Office or Copyright Department
  • LO = Learning Outcomes
  • OL = Open Learning
  • OLFM = Open Learning Faculty Member, the subject matter expert who delivers the course to students. By the way, contractually we are obliged to write out the words "Open Learning Faculty Member" rather than using its abbreviation "OLFM" in all our official course materials.
  • SME = Subject Matter Expert, the person(s) hired to write the content of the course.
  • TRU = Thompson Rivers University
  • URL = Uniform Resource Locator, this is a web address


Other Handy Words:

asynchronous = not occurring at the same time (dictionary.com) as in asynchronous discussions, discussions that are spread over time (e.g. as in the discussions on Facebook or Twitter).
